Those days as a child when you had no fear or stress about anything are long gone.
At times being an adult is extremely difficult. Navigating what is right or wrong choices in life, how to cope and deal with things is now all on your shoulders. The pressure you feel can at times be so overwhelming. Which is where anxiety fits right in.
My anxiety as an adult has grown substantially and at times has been hard to deal with. Not knowing how to cope properly or in a “healthy” way has led me to some dark and lonely times. Main triggers for me personally are stressful situations or life circumstances that are uncontrollable, the things you don’t see coming or the ones that change your life drastically.
I was often ashamed at the fact that I struggled with anxiety and the stigma that surrounds the word but have recently learned that there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed of. All of us deal with things so differently and have a way of coping and living life. Some have a harder time with it than others and some people have major challenges that stand in their way which cause the anxiety to grow. However, no part of that is shameful or should be viewed as a weakness.
The problem is that our world is full of pressures from social media and the internet in general. You aren’t young enough, not skinny enough, not rich enough. Are we ever going to be enough? When you struggle with anxiety and are surrounded by negativity or an unrealistic prospective on life those feelings of anxiety grow, your insecurities grow because you never feel good enough. The days of kids just playing in the dirt and not having much care in the world are gone. Now you look around and kids are sitting in front of electronics and are constantly seeing the pressures in the shows they watch or the way they see us responding to everything. It is not a way of living however it is our reality these days.
On the days I’m feeling overwhelmed and stressed out I try some simple steps which have currently helped me in focusing my attention on something else. If you are also looking for some tips or tricks to help you when your feeling those anxieties try these simple steps.
Here are some things to try when feeling overwhelmed and stressed:
Focus on something you can taste.
Things you can smell around you.
What can you feel, maybe it’s a soft blanket or maybe it’s the wind in your hair. It might even be an emotion your feeling.
Close your eyes and really tune in to what you can hear around you.
Things you can see around you at that time.
Trying these 5 things to focus your attention on something else, shifting focus onto what’s important which is you and your well being. Sometimes you might have to repeat this if your feeling on the verge of a panic attack and sometimes you might only get to number three. Whatever works for you in the moment.
Remember you’re not alone and that many other people are struggling around you, there is nothing to be ashamed about and talking about it sometimes gives you freedom and more clarity.
